Solid Wall Properties in 16 village locations; East Northamptonshire, Rutland and Cambridgeshire

Project Background

Spire Homes required the thermal upgrade of approximately 430 solid wall properties encompassing 16 villages and semi-rural areas in and around the above locations, over a three year period.

This Insuletics’ project was carried out for Spire Homes by Thomas Vale as main contractor with the external wall insulation system installed by Astley Facades.

The aim of the refurbishment was to significantly enhance the existing properties thermal envelope and improve the living standards of the residents, reinvigorating pride and respect in their communities.

The existing houses had a mixture of different finishes, which included exposed brick work plinths, decorative brickwork features, smooth and rough cast varied coloured render finishes.

The Insuletics BBA Approved Insul-Cryl E 1.5mm Acrylic Thin-Coat Anti-Crack Render, Insul-Dash E and Insul-Mace E Brick Effect Render Systems were selected for the project.

Project Challenges

A significant design challenge for this project was the many varied archetypes of solid wall property from area to area which required detailed upfront surveys to ensure bespoke details were drawn up in advance of work commencing on site thus mitigating on-site installation delays

Another feature of the design was the choice of render colours, and the requirement by Spire Homes and the local planning authorities to keep the upgraded external facades in keeping with the existing street scenes. In order to achieve the desired colour scheme, Insuletics surveyed each of the property archetypes and matched finish render colours and finishes as closely as possible, produced samples of all of the varying finish and colour types and drew up elevation treatment drawings for approval prior to work commencing on site.

The System & Results

These external wall insulation systems incorporated a 90mm thick Enhanced Polystyrene Insulation core with a thermal conductivity of 0.032 W/mK.

The existing solid walls had a thermal performance of 2.10 W/m2K. After the installation of the Insuletics’ external wall system, the U-value that was achieved was 0.30 W/m2K.
